Case Closed – disclose Detective Conan’s ageless secret

How do the characters in Detective Conan remain the same age for 25 years? This is probably one of the hardest case to crack. However, last year when the movie Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer released, the director Yuzuru Tachikawa revealed the reason why the characters never aged.

I am sorry. I cannot reveal the reason before introducing what is Detective Conan. Case Closed, also known as Detective Conan is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama in 1994. Due to legal problems with the name Detective Conan, the English version is renamed as Case Closed. The story surrounds an amateur detective who looks like a 7-year-old kid but have a mental age of a teenager.

The story begins with a character called Jimmy Kudo, who is a high school detective who works for the police occasionally to solve cases. During one of the investigation, he was attacked by the Black Organization and they forced him to ingest an experimental poison that transform him into a child. He then adopted the name Conan Edogawa and continue to help a private detective to solve mysteries.

The most recent film Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer released in April 12, 2018 and it has grossed over 108.11 million USD worldwide. It quickly becomes the second highest-grossing Cased Closed film of all time.

Many people have question about Conan Edogawa’s age. Some said that he never grows up because that is how anime works. As intellectuals, we do not easily accept this theory. And we are right because after the release of the recent film, the truth revealed.

The one truth prevails

The director Yuzuru Tachikawa answered the question of all time. He said that from the series’ first release until now, it has only been five months. So the truth is, they did age, by five months.

I can only find very limited sources about this interview but there is no other answer to this question. I can only believe that in the past 25 years, in the Detective Conan world, it has only been five years. In this “short” five months, Conan has already solved over 600 cases. He has seen more dead bodies than a cemetery can hold in these few months.

Are you persuaded by this explanation? Do you want Conan to grow up?

Summer 2018, I binge-watched most of the Detective Conan films. I enjoyed most of them but some of the cases were disappointing. My favorite one out all is most definitely Case Closed: The Phantom of Baker Street.

The story is about a child prodigy Hiroki Sawada – who, by the age of ten is already a MIT graduate student and has developed a DNA Tracker software— has been under a software giant Schindler, Inc’s ownership. One day, when Sawada finished his artificial intelligent system Noah’s Ark and sends the software through the telephone lines, he disappears and appears to have killed himself.

The scene shift to the company’s big release of a video game. Lucky children candidates were able to participate in the game. The game was set in 221B Baker Street and the young players need to find Jack the Ripper or else they would be killed by Jack the Ripper in the virtual world and the real world. The end of the story is my favorite part of the whole movie, but I will not spoil the story for you. A good movie always ends with a good plot twist and leave me in shock for a good while after it is over.
