TIFF Hosts North American Premiere of Makoto Shinkai’s ‘Weathering With You’

Makoto Shinkai’s highly anticipated latest film, Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko, 天気の子) will run in the Special Presentations track at The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the largest film festival in North America. GKIDS made the announcement on their Official Twitter Account that Weathering With You would be making its Toronto International Film Festival Debut this September.

TIFF 2019 describes Weathering With You as follows: In the highly anticipated follow-up to his 2016 anime box-office hit Your Name, Makoto Shinkai returns with the story of a runaway teenager who meets a girl with the fantastical ability to stop the rain and clear the sky.

From the first English-subtitled trailer that was released on July 23, the resemblance to Your Name’s striking background and the theme of adolescent longing is observable. Japanese rock band Radwimps, which was responsible for Your Name’s soundtrack, wrote the original soundtrack. Weathering With You’s The soundtrack is currently available for streaming in the United States (https://song.link/album/i/1472726420).

The movie will be eligible to compete for the coveted People’s Choice award at TIFF, a non-juried prize determined by popular vote by the viewers attending TIFF 2019. Many films that win the People’s Choice award later go on to earn Academy Award nominations.

The 44th TIFF will be held at theaters in Toronto, Ontario from September 5 to 15.
